- Excessive alcohol use has immediate effects that increase the risk of many harmful health conditions. These immediate effects are most often the result of binge drinking and include the following: Violence, including intimate partner violence and child maltreatment. About 35% of victims report that offenders are under the influence of alcohol. Alcohol use is also associated with 2 out of 3 incidents of intimate partner violence. Studies have also shown that alcohol is a leading factor in child maltreatment and neglect cases, and is the most frequent substance abused among these parents.
- According to a 1995 survey of fourth through sixth graders, less than a third (30%) learned about the dangers of drinking and smoking at school.
- Alcohol use is involved in approximately 25% to 50% of adolescent and adult deaths associated with water recreation.
- Often those closest to an alcoholic find it difficult to see and acknowledge that someone they know and care about can be an alcoholic. They may believe the promises that the alcoholic keeps making. However, with time, repeated breaking of these promises can force those living with the alcoholic to face the truth.
