- Currently, nearly 14 million Americans, 1 in every 13 adults-abuse alcohol or are alcoholic. Several million more adults engage in risky drinking patterns that could lead to alcoholism.
- Vomiting is part of the body's automatic defense system that is activated in order to prevent more alcohol from being absorbed.
- A study of 10,000 patients in both in-patient and outpatient alcohol treatment found that the 90% who attended AA meetings at least weekly and took part in aftercare for one year were able to abstain from the use alcohol at all during that year.
- Physical changes that are commonly associated with the aging process can make older people feel "high" even after drinking small amounts of alcohol. So even if there is no medical reason to avoid alcohol, older men and women should consider limiting themselves to one to two drinks per day.
